Organic Food May Lower the Risk of Pesticide Exposure

I recently came across a CBS Channel 2 in New York article online.  They did a real good article on organic food, and mentioned that organic foods are less contaminated than “conventionally grown” commercial produce.

You can check out the whole CBS article by following the link.

The main point of their article was positive overall, and it makes the the case that organic fruits and veggies have very little contamination.  Unfortunately, their piece questioned if the extra expense for buying organic products was worth the reduced exposure.

One point left out in the article?

That overall, “conventionally grown” produce is less nutritious than organic.

The way I see it, the extra expense is worth it to you and your family because…

  1. pound for pound organically grown products are more nutritious for you
  2. reduced exposures to pesticides is ALWAYS a good idea

Additionally, buying organic supports local growers (typically) and is much more environmentally sustainable. Another great reason to buy and eat organic products.

There are numerous studies showing that organic has higher levels of nutrition and minerals.

You can check out the Journal for Alternative & Complementary Medicine study by following the link.  And please check out a good article from the San Francisco Chronicle here.

While more expensive initially, I think the cost of organic in the long run will prove to be the better buy.

  11. organic products like veggies and cotton are much healthier for us and nowadays the costs are somewhat similar to non organic products. it’s just like anything, if you shop at whole foods their organic is going to be more expensive than the farmers market. if you shop at barney’s their organic cotton clothing and bedding is going to be MUCH more expensive than somewhere like target. the point being, there is stuff out there at competitive prices, it just depends on where you shop.
