Over the past few years the emphasis has shifted away from “weight loss” and moved toward that of developing a “healthy lifestyle.”
And in my opinion that’s good.
For one thing, the idea of “weight loss” has a negative connotation to it – a moving away from something you don’t like about yourself.
Call it negative motivation.
On the other hand, developing a healthy lifestyle is more positive in nature – a moving toward a goal or outcome that embraces an holistic approach beyond “diets, pills and surgery.”
So is the difference really that big a deal?
The benefits of personal training and nutrition counseling
Studies have shown time and again that most people either fail to reach their weight loss goals, or gain the weight right back once they are “off their diet.”
And really, it’s not so surprising.
For starters, studies have shown what most of us know all along – that the “following” the latest “fad” diet is not the key to your optimum weight, or a healthier lifestyle.
People start diets only to give up on them.
Sounds familiar, right?
The twin pillars of are, and remain:
- to eat right
- and exercise
The goal of nutritional counseling is to help you identify and manage food and nutrition-related concerns by analyzing and assessing your diet, work schedule, exercise habits and lifestyle.
Nutritional counseling also provides support to help you stay on track to achieve your goals.
Let’s face it, for a plan to be realistic it has to fit both your nutritional needs, weight loss goals, and be customized to your situation.
This is accomplished through:
- weight monitoring
- education about weight
- food records (i.e. food and mood diary)
- self-control strategies
- meal planning
When it comes to exercise working with a personal trainer has a similar approach.
The key is to work with someone who is both knowledgeable about which exercises are best for your health and fitness goals and someone who can help you stay motivated. After all, you need a workout routine that fits into your busy schedule.
Let’s face it, changing a lifetime of habits doesn’t happen overnight.
We all need help from time to time to reach our goals — and stay committed to the program.
By working with a team of knowledgeable professionals who are able to provide instruction and encouragement there’s no doubt you’ll be able to achieve your lifestyle and fitness goals.
No wonder “dieting” has given way to a more holistic approach.
