Almost 100,000 Americans suffer from chronic neck pain.
Many of them posses symptoms from things such as stiff neck, limited range of motion, and poor posture.
While everyone is familiar with these symptoms, they are not familiar with the more medical term for them which is Torticollis. One of the main ways to recognize Torticollis is a person that has a posture with their head tilted to one side.
Causes of Torticollis
The most common demographic that would encounter is a person between 30 and 60, with women affected twice as often as men. People with poor sleeping habits, or posture, are also more prone to get Torticollis.
Torticollis can be a congenital condition or it can be a acquired condition that will develop over time.
It can also be the result of whiplash or other accident, and get progressively worse over time. Bad posture while performing day to day activities such as a computer job, manual labor, or bad sleeping posture can also contribute to the condition.
Treatment options
There are many treatment options for Torticollis.
It is my opinion that the first line of defense to prevent or improve your Torticollis is gentle stretching and gentle range of motion exercises to strengthen the muscles of the neck.
Another option for treating Torticollis is traditional medical treatment of anti-inflammatory of even neck surgery. I do believe that these options may be necessary, but they should be considered as a last resort due to the related risks.
Massage therapy can be a great stand alone or complementary treatment for Torticollis. Deep tissue massage will draw oxygen rich blood to the injured or weak muscles, to help facilitate healing.
Although Torticollis is a less talked health condition compared to things like back pain.
There are still almost 100,000 people in the United States suffer from Torticollis. For these people the pain is a daily occurrence. It is always best to be proactive when treating any neuro-muscular condition.
I believe that it is also best to be informed about all of your options before choosing one particular treatment option over another.
