Good health and aging well isn’t about having good genes. Nor is it dependent on luck, either.
Wellness is about your lifestyle.
And though it’s nice to indulge in a glass of wine or two, maybe some chocolate and a “duvet day” once Friday night hits, occasionally it is nice to think: “just because it’s the weekend, I don’t have to throw all my healthy habits out the window.”
Here are just a few tips to take that “wellness weekend” you will thank yourself for!
5 Easy-to-implement wellness tips
1. Start the morning with a meditation
Instead of having your usual late sleep-in, wake up early on a Saturday and start the day with a positive vibe.
Sit down for just as long as you are comfortable, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Maybe you can use a meditation tape, or maybe some silence is enough for you. Make sure you do this before making your coffee, checking your Facebook or anything else which may take away the blissful benefits.
2. Start the weekend with a healthy breakfast or brunch
Some Saturdays we wake up so late that breakfast time has been and gone, and we end up grabbing a sandwich for lunch. This weekend, try to pack yourself full of goodness to start off your weekend.
Recently, I have been mixing my cereal with some blueberries, organic yoghurt and some flaxseeds, a simple and easy recipe to make, but sets me up perfectly for the day!
3. Take a few sun salutations
Maybe your weekends are your days off from your yoga practice, and that’s fine, everyone needs a break. But just taking a few short sun salutations in the morning can really wake you up and change your perspective and outlook on the day ahead.
4. Stock up on nutritious goodies
Is the weekend your time for the weekly grocery shop?
Make sure you get plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein. Plan your meals for the week ahead, and you will feel much more positive, knowing that each day you have a healthy, nutritious meal to look forward to.
Clean out the fridge, and get rid of all the old stuff…tidy room, tidy mind!
5. Go for a walk
Take a stroll around your neighborhood in the sunshine, how often do you walk around the area in which you live?
Perhaps you are always in a rush, or always driving, notice the nature, the people and the atmosphere of your local home. If it’s raining….do it anyway! Don your waterproofs and brave the rain, sometimes there’s nothing nicer than a walk in the rain.
Then come home to dry off and curl up with a good book and a cup of hot tea.
Consider taking a yoga class
If you’re new to yoga, or thinking about taking your first class, it can be a bit daunting.
But don’t fear.
I recently shared an article on 9 tips for people who are new to yoga.
The key to getting the most out of your class is finding the right studio and/or teacher. And then maybe start with weekly classes until you get into the swing of things. Yoga is good for both your body and your mind.
It’s a great way to unwind, relax, and become a bit more flexible.
