By now we all pretty much know that exercise is important for our health.
So why do so many of us stop exercising soon after we start?
In other words, if we KNOW that exercise helps to promote a healthier lifestyle, why do we still give up so soon after starting an exercise program?
The answers may surprise you…
Exercise and your health
When it comes to sticking with an exercise program ask yourself this:
- why do some people stick with it while others don’t?
- how motivated are you by the health benefits of exercise?
In light of these questions researchers have noted that the best way to help people stick to an exercise program is to look at those people to love to exercise.
So what did they find?
Most people who start exercising say the goal is to lose weight or improve their health.
But those who begin on the promise of imperceptible health effects often stop, Dr. Dishman said, saying they do not have time, or are too tired after work, or they just lost interest.
In other words, without clear goals it’s hard for most people to stick with a program, unless of course they enjoy the exercise or activity for its own sake.
For example, if your exercise regimen includes cycling and you happen to enjoy the activity you’re more likely to stick with it over someone who takes up cycling because they want to be “healthier.”
I know, it sounds obvious.
Yet, there is an important lesson here with regards to staying on track with your exercise routine.
First, sticking with any change to your “norm” involves a lifestyle change. People who need to change their diet, for example, due to health reasons often require emotional support to stick with the new changes, especially in the first few months.
And the same goes with exercise.
Consider other factors as well.
For example:
- changing the environment where you work out (i.e. away from home)
- consider working out with others (i.e. sense of community)
- choose an activity that might interest you or enjoy for its own sake
- work with a personal trainer to hold you accountable
Only by acknowledging and addressing the social and emotional factors with respect to exercise are you more likely to stick with a program long after others have dropped off, given up, or moved on.
Does that make sense to you?
