You may be asking yourself what weight management means, and how is it different from weight loss?
With an estimated 60% of the North American population currently overweight there has been a lot of emphasis lately on the best ways for losing weight. And if have just successfully dropped a couple of pounds, congratulations – you did it!
Now here comes the challenge – keeping the weight off!
Weight management simplified…
Weight loss is fairly straight forward.
Though there are many weight loss programs available they all basically fall into three main camps:
- pills/supplements
- meal programs
- exercise
So how does weight management fit into all this?
Research has shown that only 20% of dieters keep excess weight off long term once they have reached their target goal. In other words, 80% of people end up on the weight loss roller coaster, losing the weight and then, eventually gaining it back (and sometimes even more than before).
Weight management, on the other hand, focuses on arriving at your ideal weight.
And then helping you to maintain your target weight.
Think about this fact for a minute… when dieting in the past (or using another approach to weight loss) how did you arrive at your “target” weight? If you’re like most people the answer is simple… you didn’t.
Rather than knowing what target weight was right for you, most people simply say they want to “lose 20 pounds” or “fit into those skinny jeans again.” And though the feeling behind those sentiments is admirable, the lack of a clearly articulated and realistic goal is probably the #1 reason why women fail to keep the weight off.
The goal of weight management is to help you identify a healthy target weight for you, and then help you make realistic lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, etc.) to maintain that weight.
Can you see how different this approach is to traditional weight loss?
The only truly good reason to lose weight should be to arrive a “healthier you.”
And losing weight and achieving your weight loss goals is only half of your journey — the other half is making sure you keep the weight off once it’s gone.
