You may already know that spirulina is an amazing source of protein. And finding healthy (and alternative) sources for protein when you’re a vegetarian can sometimes be a challenge.
The issue I had when I first tried spirulina was finding a way to incorporate it into smoothies and milkshakes without, well, being grossed out in the process. Let’s face it, when you open up the bag for the first time you’ll be thinking “swamp.” And my first few efforts at finding TASTY ways to incorporate it into recipes proved challenging.
Well, I think I finally figured it out. The key is to pair it with an equally strong favor profile… in my case, bananas. Bananas tend to become the dominant flavor when using them in milkshakes and smoothies, so I thought they might be able to stand up to the equally strong favor of spirulina.
And I was correct.
So here you go, a spirulina milkshake recipe you can try out…
- 1 banana
- 1 teaspoon organic spirulina powder
- 1 teaspoon organic honey
- 1 cup of frozen mango chunks
- 2 scoops vanilla ice cream
- roughly 2 to 3 cups milk (you can use almond milk if you prefer)
Blend for about 2 to 3 minutes, starting on “chop” and ending with “frappe.” You’ll notice how quickly the milk shake becomes green. But don’t worry. Once you take a sip you’ll notice the taste of bananas first and foremost.
Enjoy…
